Helping Others

In previous articles, I’ve mentioned the importance of helping others as a significant part of your networking efforts.  Many people have trouble with this and feel that the only way to help somebody is to provide them with a new client or prospect.  And, they are uncomfortable providing a referral to people they may not know that well.

Here are some ideas to keep in mind for helping people you meet when you want to begin a new collaborative relationship.

1) Invitation
Invite people to an event or seminar that you know about.  Invite them to join you in your networking group.  Groups always like to have visitors and its a good way to be known for continually providing good introductions.

2) Information
Share an article, blog or online video with someone you think will find it useful.  People like to know that you are thinking about them and this is a great way to keep in touch with people without asking for something.  Send out an informative newsletter that is helpful to those who read it rather than egregious self promotion.

3) Introduction
Try connecting others who might do business together.  You derive no direct business benefit, but you will be remembered as the person who brought them together.

A NYC real estate agent I know, Andrea Saturno-Sanjana,  had two clients–one a writer and the other an editor.  She invited them both to a presentation at a university club on a topic of mutual interest to them.  They both met each other and also met other great people in the publishing field.  Although her field is real estate–not publishing–she thought of her clients and wanted to share an opportunity with them.

What ideas do you have about helping others?  Put them on the blog so we can all benefit from your knowledge and expertise.
